Some would have banished Craig Bellamy for brandishing a golf club at a team-mate, but Rafael Benítez does not tend to indulge in showy gestures. Pragmatism is his watchword and so, instead of making Bellamy an outcast, he stuck to his plan to pick the Welsh troublemaker. Vindication for that clear thinking came with a gloriously unexpected triumph that leaves Liverpool favourites to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
